RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of entry passages providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces participating in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were among numerous UK service members deployed over the festive period. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
